Getting to know Sophie Nijebower – Founder of Earthshake.
What's the story behind Earthshake and how did it all start?
Earthshake began as a response to a growing need for more mindful energy. I founded the brand during a challenging time in my life, following a period of burnout and my personal experience of feeling stuck, where regular coffee wasn’t helping me move forward.
As a sustainability consultant for a bank, I encountered some significant life events that led me to explore topics such as emotional intelligence and natural medicine. Through this journey, I discovered the benefits of functional mushrooms for brain health and overall wellbeing, and the powerful effects of adaptogens.
These natural ingredients supported our focus, clarity, and recovery — without the crash often associated with caffeine. That discovery sparked something bigger: a mission to create functional, delicious, and sustainable alternatives to conventional coffee.
We came together with backgrounds in sustainability, supply chain ethics, and wellness, determined to craft products that feel good and do good. From sourcing organic-certified partners to perfecting flavour profiles, every step has been shaped by intention and care. The result? Earthshake blends like Mushroom Coffee and Mushroom Cacao — designed to support energy, focus, and calm through plant-based power.
Can you share more about your approach to sourcing and roasting coffee?
Our approach to sourcing coffee is rooted in transparency, traceability, and quality. We work closely with farmers and producers who share our values — from the Cerrado Mineiro region in Brazil to Chickmagalur in India.
Our coffee capsules feature 100% single-origin Brazilian Arabica, naturally sun-dried to preserve its deep, complex flavour. This is combined with Indian Cherry Robusta for a bold, full-bodied profile. Together, these beans create a smooth, flavourful base — complemented by functional mushroom extracts like Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps to enhance focus, energy, and vitality.
The roasting process is carefully managed to bring out natural notes of chocolate, hazelnut, caramel, and stone fruit. Every capsule is a balance of taste and functionality — coffee that doesn’t just taste great, but also supports your day.
What motivated Earthshake to explore the capsule coffee format?
We wanted to make functional coffee accessible and effortless, without compromising on quality or purpose. Capsules offered the ideal way to bring adaptogenic wellness into the daily lives of people who love coffee, but want more than just a caffeine boost.
By combining premium Arabica beans with functional mushrooms like Lion’s Mane for focus, Cordyceps for energy, and Reishi for calm, we crafted a range of low-caffeine, wellness-driven blends in a Nespresso-compatible capsule. It's a simple, sustainable upgrade to your daily cup — designed for how you actually live.
We all have our morning routines, and coffee is often a crucial part of it. What is your morning ritual like?
For us at Earthshake, mornings are about grounding, not just waking up. That first cup of coffee or cacao is a moment to reset, reflect, and gently step into the day with intention.

What are you most excited about right now and for the future of Earthshake as a brand/business?
We're excited to be part of a shift in how people approach wellness. Earthshake is not just about coffee or cacao — it’s about creating functional, sustainable routines that help people feel better and live more intentionally.
Right now, we're focused on expanding our functional capsule line, growing our presence in organic retail like Ekoplaza, and building a community that values both health and planet. We see each blend as a small but powerful tool for daily transformation — and we’re just getting started.
