Getting to know Mervin Lim - Co-Founder of Fluid.

What's the story behind Fluid and how did it all start?

We wanted to be fluid, to take different shapes and forms. As cliche as it might sound, one of our goals was to be a community-driven spot, by sharing facilities and resources to help fellow industry peers and businesses move forward.

Can you share more about your approach to sourcing and roasting coffee?

A good raw material goes a long way. We focus mainly on micro-lots, which are usually harvested and processed separately due to their unique and distinct qualities. This offers us traceability and information of how the coffee was grown. When it comes to roasting, we approach every single coffee with the intention of its extraction method as well as preserving its terroir characteristics.

What motivated Fluid to explore the capsule coffee format?

We wanted to recreate a similar coffee profile which replicated the experience in our store - with convenience in mind. By expanding our market audience with capsules, we hope to lower the barrier of entry to specialty coffee and pique their interest in trying different coffee origins.

We all have our morning routines, and coffee is often a crucial part of it. What is your morning ritual like?

My morning ritual revolves around calibrating the day’s coffee before operations start. This quiet time before the rush allows me to be immersed in tasting, allowing me time to make notes for future roasts.

What are you most excited about right now and for the future of Fluid as a brand/business?

We have always positioned ourselves as a brand that supports the local coffee community. This takes the form as a co-roasting facility as well as a regular cupping venue. We are also planning to have more pop-ups / guest shifts later this year!
