Recipe 011: Golden Flat White

Recipe 011: Golden Flat White

A golden-hued beverage has taken the non-coffee menus of independent cafes by storm, and it’s apparently very good for you! Used for hundreds of years in Ayurvedic medicine and Indian households, turmeric and warm milk make up a soothing elixir that’s said to boost immunity and provide anti-inflammatory effects. It’s made by combining the antioxidant-rich turmeric, which has low bio-availability, with other ingredients that greatly increase its absorption, such as black pepper and full-fat milk. The efficacy of this beverage’s health benefits is an argument for another time, but there’s something to be said about the lovely combination of warming spices and warm milk. In today’s recipe, we’re caffeinating this ancient tonic with a sweet espresso to round out the flavours. A soothing, complex pick-me-up – that’s what this Golden Flat White is about!

Ingredients:

  • 180ml of milk
  • 1 tsp of turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp of nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp of ground ginger
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • 30g or ml espresso (brewed from 1 capsule)
  • 20g of honey

Simply combine the milk, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and pepper in a saucepan and stir under low heat until warm, but not simmering (about 60 degrees Celsius). If you have a heat-proof or immersion blender, give it a spin for a few seconds for a thin layer of froth that will enhance the texture and aroma of the drink. Pull your espresso into an 8oz thick-walled glass or cup. Stir in the honey to form a thick sweetened coffee base. Slowly pour your frothy spiced milk into the coffee. Garnish with more turmeric and black pepper.
